Careers Education & Guidance Overview
What is Careers Education and why is it important?
At Eggar’s we intend to foster a culture of belonging, aspiration and achievement where every student is happy, healthy and equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue their chosen career pathways and succeed in an evolving world of work.
We are commitment to providing career guidance and support to empower our students to make informed decisions about their future pathways. Our programme of Careers Education is designed to ensure that all students have access to high-quality careers education, information, advice and guidance that will help them be successful.
What do students learn in Careers Education?
In Careers Education, our students learn:
- To develop employability skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience.
- To identify personal strengths, interests, and values.
- To explore different job sectors and roles.
- To understand labour market information (LMI) and future trends.
- To reflect on experiences to inform future career decisions.
Summary of curriculum content
Careers Education features throughout our school curriculum, with subject areas making use of the Gatsby Framework to allow students to link their learning to future outcomes and career pathways. Within the Eggar’s Pastoral Curriculum we encourage students to celebrate national events, such as National Careers Week and National Apprenticeships Week by participating in assemblies and tutor time PSHE activities.
Each student will also receive specific Careers Education within the PSHE curriculum, with one unit of work being dedicated specifically to this throughout the year. College assemblies and visits are also a key part of our curriculum offer, ensuring that students have multiple opportunities to engage with our partner establishments whilst at Eggar’s.

Careers Guidance and Advice
At Eggar’s we offer at least two encounters with a qualified Careers Advisor to every student before they leave us in Yr11. We have two qualified members of staff who conduct both 1:1 and small group careers appointments, offering relevant information for all pathways, including apprenticeships and vocational training.
As part of our commitment to Careers Education, we have developed close links to our local FE providers. Students in Yr10 have the opportunities to visit establishments as part of a whole cohort enrichment programme, allowing students to experience taster sessions of courses they have expressed an interest in. We have also partnered with Peter Symonds College, allowing our students to have some piece of mind that they will be called to interview should they wish to apply for a place in Year 12.
Learning beyond the classroom
Eggar’s School prioritises students first-hand experience of the work place, which is why we have a 5 day work experience (WEX) week scheduled for Yr10 students annually. We operate a self-placement scheme in partnership with EBP South, to allow students to take control of their own experiences and engagement with the workplace. We believe that this is an invaluable opportunity for students to build upon their personal preferences for a career, whilst experiencing the realities of working hours, workplace environments and how to contribute to wider teams.
In 2026, Yr10 will complete WEX between Monday 18 and Friday 22 May. Students have had an assembly on self-placement and parents were invited to attend a webinar. Slides from these can be found on the attachments, as well as a copy of the self-placement form that needs to be completed and returned to confirm WEX placement.
We encourage students and their families to engage with careers talk beyond the classroom by asking students to:
-
- Discussing their skills and interests with a view to understanding their preferences for future careers.
- Visit college open days ahead of team.
- Gain valuable work experience by taking on wider responsibilities.
- Open conversations about local opportunities for careers and shortages within LMI.
