Governance

Welcome!

The Eggar’s School Local Governing Body includes parents, staff and members of the community who strive to make a difference.  Our primary focus is always the best interests of the students.

Our governors bring diverse skills, extensive experience from both ‘the real world’ and education, ranging from primary through to university.  We have genuine care and compassion for our students, families and community.

Through communication and collaboration, we work hard to provide confident and strong strategic leadership.

If you wish to contact me, please email below, noting that the message is for my attention.

Eggar's Governor Attendance 2024-2025

Linda Campbell,
Chair of Governors

Having come later into the teaching profession, it was my privilege and pleasure to be a teacher at Eggar’s School for twenty-two years. During that time, I enjoyed a variety of roles and responsibilities including teacher of history (and a few other subjects), Curriculum Leader, Progress Leader, SENCo, Designated Teacher for Looked After Children, Safeguarding Lead and Assistant Head Teacher; not all simultaneously! I retired from teaching in 2019.

I also have experience as a parent of a student at the school. My son attended Eggar’s from 2003 to 2008.

I was initially the Safeguarding Governor for Eggar’s and also undertook this role for a local independent school. I resigned from their Governing Board when I became Chair of the Board of Governors at Eggar’s in 2023.

During my time as Chair of Governors the school has continued to thrive and succeed. In March 2025 the school made the decision to join the Weydon Multi Academy Trust (WMAT), and alongside our colleagues at WMAT, I look forward to seeing the school continue to further thrive and succeed.

Lisa Hillan,
Vice Chair of Governors

I became an Eggar’s parent governor in February 2013, and chair of the trust board for nine years from September 2014. I also served as a parent then foundation governor at Chawton C of E Primary School for nearly ten years. Before moving to England in 2007, I administered graduate-level legal training programmes at the University of San Diego, where I obtained my Doctor of Jurisprudence.  Earlier in my career, I taught high school English in Illinois.

For the last five years, my “day job” with the King’s Arms Youth Project initially involved setting up the Alton youth centre and I now serve as Youthlink Manager, liaising with schools, agencies, organisations and groups that work with and support children and young people.  I chair the East Hants Local Children’s Partnership, and am involved with various area forums and partnerships.

“Making a difference” through community service is important to me, and I am privileged to volunteer for a number of local charities and service organisations, such as Alton Rotary, The Parish of the Resurrection and Alton & District Community Relief Foundation, amongst others.

Jackie Keen

I have been a Governor for over 20 years in a variety of schools in Hampshire, across the age ranges. I have, during that time, served in a variety of roles - parent, staff, community and local authority.

I am also currently a Governor at a school in Aldershot.

At Eggar's I am on the Curriculum, Students and Environment committee.

Liz Stokes

An in-house lawyer and mother of four children, the eldest two of which currently attend Eggar's, with my son due to start in September. I have been a parent governor at Eggar's for two years now, having previously held the same position at a local infant school for 6 years prior to that. I am currently Chair of the Finance & Personnel Committee.

Martin Green

I was a parent governor at Anstey Junior School for seven years, with experience of senior staff recruitment, and both Finance and Curriculum committees.

Historically I have been involved in community work with Alton Cricket club, including a recent spell as Chairman, having previously coached and organised teams.

Mark Young

I joined as a Parent Trustee in December 2021, fresh to the school governor role, although I have served for several years as a trustee of the professional institute that I belong to.  I've been working in transport safety since 2012 having spent most of my career before that as a university academic.  I have two children at Eggar's and have been really pleased with how well the school has treated them both, so I wanted to join the Governing Body to give something back.

David Myerscough

I joined the Board of Governors in December last year, and I am delighted to have done so.

I have recently moved back to Alton after living abroad for the last 11 years. I have a daughter at Eggar's and have been impressed with how she has been welcomed into the school.

Having started my career as a teacher, I moved into Human Resources and currently work as a Human Resources Director for a Civil Engineering company. I hope that, with my experience, I will be able to give something back to the school.

Liz Mcgrath As a parent of a pupil at the school, I have a strong personal commitment to its success and the outcomes for all children. Alongside this, I am a qualified auditor specialising in the charity and not-for-profit sector, with significant experience working with Multi-Academy Trusts and independent schools. My professional background has given me an understanding of governance, accountability, financial and risk management. I hope to use both my professional expertise and my perspective as a parent to support the school, helping to ensure it continues to provide a high-quality education and a supportive environment for every pupil.
Sarah Holman,
Head Teacher

I became Head Teacher at Eggar's in September 2023, having taught in Hampshire for 24 years.  Throughout my career, I have enjoyed a range of leadership and advisory roles, most recently as Deputy Head Teacher at The Petersfield School.  I am passionate about high quality teaching and learning, and still enjoy teaching English in the classroom alongside my Head Teacher responsibilities.  I love to challenge and motivate all students to achieve their academic potential and to exceed their own expectations of themselves in all areas of school life.  I am committed to ensuring that all students are able to thrive in a supportive, purposeful environment where they are given a range of opportunities both within and beyond the classroom to experience success and develop into confident, happy, responsible individuals.  I am relentlessly positive and resolute in my pursuit of excellence, having the highest expectations for the whole school community in terms of achievement, enjoyment and sense of belonging.  It is a privilege and a pleasure to lead Eggar's into its exciting new chapter and I look forward to working with the Governors, staff, parents and students to make the school even better than it already is in the months and years ahead.

Although this was written by Joan Sallis many years ago, it continues to be true for governors of an academy:

The role of the school governor is to

  • support the school, but not uncritically

  • explain its policies to parents and the community, but not blindly

  • watch its standards, but with care, humility and an open mind

  • help settle its disputes fairly and conscientiously

  • oversee its policies and its use of the resources, but not in tiresome detail.

But you should do these things as a Governing Body, not as an individual governor, and in all such matters you should act with knowledge and understanding of the school."

From 'A Working Partnership' by Joan Sallis, governor and regular contributor to the Times Educational Supplement

The Governing Body is responsible for ensuring that it is run to promote student achievement. It works in partnership with the Senior Leadership team to:

  • Set strategic direction, policies and objectives

  • Set and approve the school budget

  • Review progress against the school’s budget and objectives to ensure value for money

Governors also help to provide:

  • Strong links between the school and the Alton area

  • A wide experience of the outside world

  • An independent view

  • A visible form of accountability for the Head Teacher and staff of the school

  • A team focusing on long term development and improvement

  • Accountability to the community for the use of resources and the standards of teaching and learning in the school

  • Support and challenge for the Head Teacher and staff
