Welcome to SKY
2023-2024

Curriculum Leader: Miss Emily Thomas

What is SKY and why is it important?

Sky is a one year intervention option that has been created to support Year 9 students’ development of English and Maths skills through real-life experiences. The cross-curricular content is planned around students’ interests and the Maths and English skills are interwoven with the topics. This approach encourages high levels of engagement, increased opportunities to be successful in learning, greater confidence in Maths and English and improved self-esteem.  Students who would benefit are invited to select SKY as a Year 9 option after being identified by the Key Skills co-ordinator, Head of Year 8 and SEND team.

What do students learn in SKY?

Alongside deeper understanding of the chosen cross-curricular topics, pupils will focus on achieving Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths at the appropriate level for them.

Challenge and support in SKY

Each group has a bespoke curriculum planned to meet their needs.

How is SKY assessed?

Parents will receive feedback on effort through the 2 Progress Reviews each year. Students will take Functional Skills English and Maths papers at whichever level is appropriate. Most will achieve Entry Level 3 and some will achieve Level 1. The exam board is Edexcel. Level 1 is the equivalent to GCSE grades 1-3.

Learning beyond the classroom

All SKY topics are developed around first hand experiences beyond the classroom e.g. workshops in Food Tech, visits to local employers or trips to London.

Where can SKY lead?

Functional Skills qualifications can support the apprenticeship route into further training and work across a broad range of subjects.
