Eggar's Powerboat Challenge

Last month, Mr Bowen took six Year 10 and 11 students, in two teams, to the amazing Haslar Marine Technology facility, run by QINETIQ in Gosport for the annual schools' powerboat challenge.

The event saw students from 10 different schools taking part in a fun-fuelled day of STEM activities. Teams were required to design, build and race a remote control speedboat around a pre-set course.

Evie and Alison, as returning champions to the event, brought their knowledge, experience, and a strong desire to win the Year 11 team, and were aided by the additional technical skills of Dan and Jake. New to the competition were Finn and Harry in Year 10 with an innovative hydroplane design. Both teams had worked together for many long afternoons after school to ensure their boats were ready and fast.

Competition was fierce this year with many teams having 'upped' their game from previous years, but the Eggar's boats held their own, eventually finishing 4th and 5th overall in the "B" final.

The day itself is long and challenging for students. They talked about careers in Marine Engineering and were questioned throughout the day by numerous judges and people from industry. All the students were amazing, balancing mature conversations with the inevitable boat repairs. We look forward to regaining our crown next year!
