Spectacular Science

Using a whoosh bottle and methane bubbles ...

There were some incredible experiments carried out in Science last week! Students were identifying the products of combustion using the whoosh bottle and methane bubbles.

We asked Mr Cartwright what it was all about!

The methane bubbles show the energy emitted when a fuel is burnt as well as the carbon dioxide that is produced. The whoosh bottle helps to show that water has been produced as well as some of the products of incomplete combustion (the soot/smoke left behind in the bottle).

We were also looking at how different elements can be identified based on the colour of flame they produce when burnt. So the students had to link each metal salt with the colour of flame that it made and then had to identify unlabelled chemicals based on the colour of the flame.

Amazing pictures, fantastic learning!
