Celebrating Judge John Hayman

Past Chair of Governors at Eggar’s and inspirational volunteer

We were saddened to hear that Judge John Hayman died last month at the age of 103. He was an inspirational volunteer in his local community, particularly in Binsted where amongst many activities, he supported The Wickham Institute for more than 30 years and "spurred stallholders on to greater efforts" at the village fete.  He was also very well-known at Eggar’s where he was both Governor and then Chair of Governors at the school in the 1980s and 1990s.

Further afield, John worked for 40 years for organisations such as The Samaritans, Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, and Hampshire Educational Appeals Service. He had the dedication and vision to improve sports facilities, maintain community spaces and to raise funds to enable these projects to flourish. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Birthday Honours List in 2019.

Typically, he asked for no flowers at the celebration of his life but for donations, if desired, to Young Minds, a charity fighting for children and young people’s mental health.
