Caelan McLone: An engineer of the future

Caelan is in Year 8.  He has always had an interest in engineering, tinkering with push bikes, scooters, motor bikes and quad bikes.  Much of his spare time has been spent on YouTube learning engineering theory but now he has been able to put his theory into practice.

A visit to Alton College enabled him to learn Arc, MIG, and Oxy acetylene welding.  The engineering staff at the College were amazed at the quality of Caelan's welding and even said that it was better than many of their 6th form engineering students!

Over the last week of term, Caelan has spent time after school in the Eggar’s workshop learning how to turn metal on the centre lathe.  He produced a lovely piece of engineering using an aluminium bar.  The test piece demonstrated facing off, knurling, thread cutting, chamfering and parting off.

Mr Waite, Curriculum Leader for Design & Technology said:

‘I am very excited by Caelans enthusiasm and skill.  He is a natural engineer and always willing to learn new skills which he picks up very quickly ... and he’s only in Year 8!  I can’t wait to see what he’s achieving in Year 11
